But it&#8217;s important to understand that having solar panels and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fondeursolar.com\/en\/lithium-batteries-for-solar-systems\/\">batteries<\/a><\/strong> doesn&#8217;t automatically guarantee that the entire property will continue to function exactly the same during a power outage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system must be specifically designed to supply power during the outage. To do this, it is necessary to define in advance which loads must remain in operation. For example:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Essential lighting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refrigeration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Security systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bombs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Office equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain appliances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critical loads of a company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping only priority loads can allow the available battery capacity to be used for longer. In other projects, it may be necessary to support a much larger proportion of the installation; everything will depend on the objectives and the sizing carried out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long can you hold loads during a power outage?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autonomy does not depend simply on having a battery, but on a relationship between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stored energy + Load consumption + Available solar generation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a given battery could maintain a few essential charges for many hours, but run out much more quickly if it must power air conditioning, pumps, motors or other high-power equipment. To calculate the range, the following should be considered: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Useful capacity of batteries;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consumption of the backed loads;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simultaneous power;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expected backup time;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photovoltaic production available;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>System losses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discharge limits set for equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, there is no universal answer to questions such as <strong>&#8220;How many hours do batteries last?&#8221;.<\/strong> The answer depends on what they should power and how the installation has been designed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can a hybrid system be suitable for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hybrid setup can be particularly interesting when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is a connection with the electricity grid;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The aim is to reduce consumption from this network;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blackouts represent a problem for the home or business;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are loads that must remain operating during outages;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You want to store energy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater flexibility in energy management is sought;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The aim is to combine solar generation and backup.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, not all users need batteries, so if the property has a stable electricity grid and the main objective is exclusively to take advantage of photovoltaic generation to reduce consumption, it may be sufficient to evaluate an <strong>On-Grid<\/strong> solution. The selection must respond to the needs of the project and not simply to the available technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you size a hybrid system?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Designing a hybrid system often requires more information than simply knowing your monthly electricity consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Energy consumption: The consumption history allows you to establish a reference on the general needs of the property.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hourly profile: It is important to know when electricity is consumed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loads that need backup: It must be determined which equipment should continue to operate when the network fails.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximum power: It is not enough to store enough kWh. The inverter and batteries must also be able to deliver the required power when different equipment is operating simultaneously. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Desired autonomy: The expected backup time directly influences the amount of storage needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solar production: The capacity of the panels to power consumption and subsequently recover the energy used from the batteries must also be analysed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Available space: Panel footage and proper placement of the inverter, batteries, and other components should be considered during design.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Future growth: If you expect to add new loads or expand storage later, it may be wise to consider it from the start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is a hybrid system better than an On-Grid?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily; adding more components doesn&#8217;t automatically turn an installation into a better solution. If a user doesn&#8217;t need storage or backup, adding a battery bank may not meet a real project need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, when power outages significantly affect the user or there are loads that need to be kept operational, a hybrid architecture can offer significant advantages.
